Ebook About
Sixteen hundred years ago Britain left the Roman Empire and swiftly fell into ruin. Grand cities and luxurious villas were deserted and left to crumble, and civil society collapsed into chaos. Into this violent and unstable world came foreign invaders from across the sea, and established themselves as its new masters. The Anglo-Saxons traces the turbulent history of these people across the next six centuries. It explains how their earliest rulers fought relentlessly against each other for glory and supremacy, and then were almost destroyed by the onslaught of the Vikings. It explores how they abandoned their old gods for Christianity, established hundreds of churches and created dazzlingly intricate works of art. It charts the revival of towns and trade, and the origins of a familiar landscape of shires, boroughs and bishoprics. It is a tale of famous figures like King Offa, Alfred the Great and Edward the Confessor, but also features a host of lesser known characters - ambitious queens, revolutionary saints, intolerant monks and grasping nobles. Through their remarkable careers we see how a new society, a new culture and a single unified nation came into being.Drawing on a vast range of original evidence - chronicles, letters, archaeology and artefacts - renowned historian Marc Morris illuminates a period of history that is only dimly understood, separates the truth from the legend, and tells the extraordinary story of how the foundations of England were laid.

Book The Anglo-Saxons: A History of the Beginnings of England Review :

As a history teacher, I have to say this book is excellent. Being of English and German descent, I’ve wanted to know more about the Anglo-Saxons, beyond the writings of Bede and the Chronicles. This book is not only detailed thoroughly, but is accessible, not bogged down with “academic talk” that can be hard to follow at times. Anyone interesting in this time period, or the origins of England, this is a must read.
As an American with deep genetic roots in the British Isles, most of them in England, and as an Anglophile from my earliest years, I enjoy reading English history. Having majored in history and then as a high school history teacher for many years, I know the importance of vivid, clear accounts firmly anchored in research. In The Anglo-Saxons by Marc Morris the fortunate reader has an excellent example of what turned me, and countless other historians and fans, on to the subject. The Anglo-Saxons begins with the final painful years of the Roman Empire, which had ruled the island of Britannia for several hundred years before withdrawing. As the Romans left the native British peoples soon came under assault from a new wave of invaders, the Germanic tribes often known as the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes (but which Morris assures us should be more complexly identified). The Saxons eventually established kingdoms (traditionally known as the Saxon Heptarchy but actually, as Morris also explains, much more numerous) and made war on each other. Some kingdoms like Mercia and Northumbria gained dominance for awhile only to decline and be conquered, while others like Sussex never seemed to gain a firm footing and quickly vanished. Alongside the political and military shuffling was the steady growth of Roman Catholicism, which managed to squeeze out other variants of Christianity at stormy meetings like the Synod of Whitby and became the dominant religion. Eventually the Kingdom of Wessex established itself as the chief Saxon political entity, and its Kings began to style themselves Kings of England. As Wessex gained power Britain came under attack from a new wave of invaders from Scandinavia. The Northmen or vikings gained increasing amounts of power and eventually, during the reign of the hapless Ethelred II "The Unready," took control of the island. The book ends shortly after the Battle of Hastings in 1066,when a band of Northmen based in what is now France conquered the nation and established a new order. The Anglo-Saxons is a well-written and fascinating history. Inevitably it focuses on the wars between the various kingdoms and the rises and falls of various monarchs, because such subjects were the focus of most of the surviving histories like that of Bede and The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. Morris has a gift for telling illuminating anecdotes and coming up with amusing turns of phrase, such as "But some additional light--and, indeed, shade--is thrown on the king by the letters of contemporary churchmen. . ." or "It was apparently just days after his birth, on the occasion of his baptism, that Ethelred the Unready revealed himself to be a wrong' un."The Anglo-Saxons is meticulously researched and documented, with an extensive Notes and Bibliography section. It is proof, as if it was needed, that well written history is as riveting as any work of fiction.
